Tooth crowding and closing disorders are very problematic situations in terms of both aesthetics and function. In addition, as perplexed teeth cannot be cleaned properly, they become susceptible to decay and gum diseases. Therefore, tooth alignments and jaw structures should be followed from the beginning of permanent teeth eruption, and when problems are detected, they should be treated with an appropriate orthodontic treatment option. For this purpose, wire therapy, oral and external appliances, transparent plates and orthognathic surgery can be applied.
It can be applied at all ages, starting from the age of 12-13 when the second molars erupt. In order for the brace treatment to be effective, the existing perplexity in the patient must be at the dental level. Entanglements caused by skeletal incompatibilities can be resolved with a more advanced method, oral appliances and orthognathic surgery. There should be no active caries, improper fillings and gum disease in the mouth. In addition, when the braces are inserted in the mouth, it will be more difficult to clean the teeth. Therefore, patients receiving orthodontic treatment should pay special attention to oral hygiene and should definitely use special orthodontic brushes.
The duration of treatment in braces varies from 6 months to a few years.
More aesthetic porcelain brackets can be used instead of metal brackets in our patients who are uncomfortable with the appearance of metal brackets. The disadvantage is that they are more expensive. In some patients, the braces can be attached to the posterior surfaces of the teeth. Dental relations should be suitable for this treatment and it is more costly.
For patients who are aesthetically uncomfortable with the appearance of the wires, the measurements are taken and sent to the relevant center. Here, patient-specific dental plaques are created. These plaques are programmed and renewed in certain periods by taking measurements again in a way that allows the teeth to move. This gradually improves the tooth alignment. It is a more costly treatment type.
Growth of the jaw bones can be directed by making special appliances inside and outside the mouth in developing children. In adults, skeletal problems can only be solved by performing a surgical operation on the jaw bones under general anesthesia.
After the treatment, in most patients, the teeth continue to move, even if a little. Therefore, unwanted shifts in tooth alignments may occur over time. In order to avoid this situation, stability is provided by using transparent plates for a certain period of time after the treatment. In addition, by connecting wires called retainers to the back faces of the anterior teeth, their alignment is prevented.
